Abstract:
Indonesian soya bean consumption is expected to rise by 75% between 1995
and 2000, with the US retaining its role as the main supplier, according to the American Soybean
Association. An expected annual growth of 10% for animal feed and 5% for human consumption is
forecast, based on increased chicken consumption: chickens are fed with soya beans and other feed. Per
capita consumption of chicken in Indonesia is 2.8 kg, compared with 17 kg in Malaysia, 40 kg in
Singapore and 7.5 kg in Thailand. Soya beans are also used to make tempeh, a soya bean-paste cake
eaten with rice. Indonesia imported 740,000 tonnes of soya beans from China in 1994, 500,000 tonnes of
which were used for feed and the rest for human consumption. It is likely that this source of supply will
reduce as demand in China grows.
