Search Tips
Choose Your Options
Use only the search options that you need--leave the others blank.
Main Subject
Enter words that describe the subject of the patent. For different word endings, use the ? wildcard: SUPERCONDUCT? Combine words to get specific information. Example: SUPERCONDUCT? AND (INSULATION OR THERMAL SHOCK)
International Class
Enter an international class code just as it appears in a patent, with all hyphens or slashes. For example, class code G08C-021/00.
Patent Assignee
Enter the name of the assigned owner. For example, SILICON GRAPHICS. Do NOT include words like Corp., Inc., etc.
Inventor Name
Enter the last name and the first name. Japanese names are sometimes inverted, so you should also try first name last name order. Example: KIN AKIRA OR AKIRA KIN. Use a wildcard after the first initial for more complete results. (To search by the company that owns the patent, use Patent Assignee.)
Patent or Application Number
Enter the 2-letter country code followed by a space and the number just as it appears in the patent or citation, with all punctuation, but omit any leading zeroes. For example, patent number JP 4045601 or application number EP 93200044. To display a list of country codes, click
Country Code List.
Note about U.S. application numbers: U.S. application numbers are reused every several years. To search by U.S. application number, if you know the application year, select the year from the Application Year drop-down list.
Priority Only (Application Number)
Check the Priority Only box to restrict application number searches to the priority application only.
Record Type
Select the box if you want records containing images.
Patent or Application Year
Select the All Years or From option. Choose the All Years option for the fastest processing. If the From option is selected, select a starting year and an ending year from the drop-down lists.
